Munich, GermanyApril 20, 2009 Cosmetics are typically applied to skin and hair to create a beneficial effect. The cosmetic industry therefore saw an enormous rise of biologically active ingredients in the 1990-ies, in particular for skin whiteners and anti-aging actives. More recently, cosmetic skin delivery systems have increased in popularity for two reasons. First of all, most active ingredients need to penetrate the skin in order to exert their biological effect. Today's consumers insist on products that work. The easy answer to that has been to increase the dose, but active ingredients are expensive and in economically challenging times, this solution is no longer accepted. Hence, there is an increased need for cosmetic delivery systems that deliver their actives effectively into the skin. Second, new European legislation (REACh) has made it much more difficult to introduce new biologically active ingredients into the market. As a consequence, there is a shift towards getting more out of existing active ingredients in both the supplier and the manufacturing cosmetic industry. But the result of all this is that the cosmetic formulator is now facing a problem. First of all, (s)he does not have the scientific background to understand, let alone play, with the principles of skin penetration to optimise skin delivery. Most cosmetic formulations are created with only their sensory properties in mind. Second, once a cosmetic formulator realises that skin delivery is needed, (s)he is overwhelmed by the plethora of cosmetic skin delivery systems available, but again lacks the background on which to chose the most appropriate skin delivery system for the application at hand. When to use an emulsion? When liposomes? When microcapsules? This workshop is designed to address all these aspects. It discusses the different requirements of skin delivery systems from a cosmetic perspective, provides the necessary scientific background underpinning skin delivery, gives the latest developments in measuring skin penetration and many of the most frequently used skin delivery systems. It will become clear that despite what people say a universal skin delivery system that always works does not exist. But once you know which cosmetic delivery system you need on scientific grounds, practical difficulties arise on the horizon, such as production and inter-individual variability between consumers. These issues will also be discussed. The cosmetic topical delivery workshop provides the complete overview from concept (skin, science, systems) to practicalities such as production and identifying the right dose. Almost too much information to remember all at once! That is why you also receive a complimentary copy of the "Science and Applications of Skin Delivery Systems" book. We have explored every corner of the world, we've conquered the universe. Now it is time to discover our very own personal envelope. Skin, the final frontier! |
