Metabolic Diseases Drug Discovery and Development - Call for Papers Dear Colleague, The incidence of diabetes is rising dramatically in our society, tied to the entity known as the metabolic syndrome, which combines glucose intolerance, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and hypertension. This coalescence of unfavorable health factors affects at least one quarter of our population and is associated with a marked increase in risk of cardiovascular disease. It is now estimated that the metabolic syndrome has a greater detrimental effect on our overall health as a society than cancer. Therefore, an increasing effort is being made to find pharmaceutical solutions to the metabolic syndrome. Bioprocess Engineering Course Supetar, Island of Brac, Croatia,4 - 10 September 2005
The next course in the long line of highly successful courses since the mid-1980s on Bioprocess Engineering will take place from 4th – 10th September 2005. Like the last one in 2003, it will be held on the beautiful island of Brac, Croatia in the Adriatic Sea. It is organised under the auspices of The European Federation of Biotechnology by the Working Group on Bioreactor Performance, in collaboration with other Working Groups (Working Group on Modelling, Monitoring, Measurement & Control and Working Group on Downstream Processing and Recovery of Bioproducts) of the Section on Biochemical Engineering Science. All of the lectures will be given by internationally distinguished university teachers or by leading experts from multinational companies.
